The Carillon Ringers Handbell Choir meets weekly to rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. under the direction of Carol Coughenour. The choir rings in worship monthly, ringing a more advanced and varied repertoire. Dedicated to musical excellence and consistent musical leadership in worship, this choir requires a certain level of commitment from its members. This commitment is not just to the music ministry but also to each ringer as together they strive to minister through music. The Handbell Program at First Presbyterian Church, Newark, DE debuted December 1972 with a starter set of Schulmerich Handbells cast in Sellersville, PA. The Program has a rich history of featured concerts in the northern Delaware area: Methodist Country House of Wilmington, Newark Lion’s Club, University of Delaware’s Amy DuPont Music Building, Winterthur Museum, Cokesbury Village of Wilmington, Brandywine River Museum, Longwood Gardens in the 1980’s, Millcroft Senior Living Community of Newark, and has participated in the state of Delaware Handbell Festivals, plus American Guild of English Handbells, Area III Festivals in Ocean City, MD. In December 2006 they will make a return visit to Longwood Gardens. The present group plays five-octaves of Schulmerich Handbells, three-octaves of Malmark Handchimes, plus various percussion instruments. Please contact Carol Coughenour at cdcougheno@aol.com for more information or if you are interested in auditioning for the concert choir.
